Whitton Reserves 5, Wanderers Reserves 0
Saturday 28th January 2006
Ridgeons Reserve League (North)
Probably as forgettable agame as it gets from a Wanderers angle. With Robbie Stannard missing, Jimmy Nunn bravely stepped into the keepers role, but management could do nothing about 2 non-arrivals and Blaine Burgess failing a late fitness test. So, a bare 12 players took to the pitch and were under the cosh from minute 1, with the pace of Whitton all over the pitch causing problems. It was no surprise when they took the lead early on, but Wanderers had a chance to redeem with a penalty soon after. However Kenyon’s kick was comfortably saved. Whitton soon made it 2-0 , as Wanderers struggled to get their game going at all, resorting to launching the ball long all the time.
Half-time – Whitton 2, wanderers 0
The half-time pint (very nice and very cheap!) was probably the highlight for me from then on in, as Whitton just dominated the game all over the pitch, running in another 3 goals with Wanderers barely troubling the home keeper. The appearance of Ben Gostik as a substitute was one of the few plusses of the day, as he battled hard on his debut when some of those around had long since given up. My man of the match would be Matt Wilson or Jimmy Nunn (who made a string of great saves and looked every inch a regular keeper), although competition probably came only from Pop Hodge who somehow managed to watch the whole 90 minutes without calling the Samaritans.
