NEWMARKET TOWN RESERVES 4 v. IPSWICH WANDERERS RESERVES 0
CHELL TROPHY
TUESDAY 20TH DECEMBER 2005
It was a perfect night for football, mild and slightly damp from earlier rain. Manager David Tournay-Godfrey had to cope with several missing regulars but brought along 1st team squad members Sam Banya and Matthew Cunningham to bolster his squad.
Newmarket launched their first attack on on 2 mins when Brown headed a free kick into the arms of Robbie Stannard. Then Marshall headed into his arms again from a corner, taken short. Newmarket continued to press as Wanderers struggled to find their rhythm and on 17 mins Olive, who was destined to be a danger all evening, ran into the area and unleashed a shot which came off the foot of the post. Grainger ran in to pick up the rebound but his shot came off the bar. From the next corner, Robbie Stannard was forced to punch away when under pressure.
Wanderers were looking all at sea and had not yet troubled the home defence or 'keeper. They were fortunate not to concede a penalty on 28 mins when Matthew Cunningham blatantly obstructed Marshall as he was through on goal, but the referee waved play on. Olive brought a fine save from Robbie Stannard but the follow up shot was blazed over the bar. Robbie Stannard saved a certain goal as he fingertipped a shot from Olive round the post but he was not so fortunate on 34 mins when the Newmarket striker's shot from an identical position saw the ball nestling in the back of the net. It was not long before Olive raced through the static Wanderers defence to hammer the ball into the roof of the net for his, and Newmarket's second.

Matthew Cunningham started the 2nd half by getting booked, Ricky Ward followed up with a direct sending off for stamping on an opponent, Tommy Youngs received a second yellow and his marching orders and the heart, discipline and common sense went out of Wanderers. Robbie Stannard, along with Paul Clow, seemed the only ones intent on playing football, the 'keeper producing a fine reaction save from Olive (again!) from close range, to palm the ball over the bar. The visitor's 'keeper could do nothing about Newmarket's third goal which Marshall scored by slipping the ball under his body and, after Robbis Stannard's only slip of the game, Smith stabbed the ball home from close range to end the scoring after 85 mins.
By some miracle the scoreline did not extend into double figures and the referee's notebook must have looked like a class register, with so many Wanderers names in it!
