IPSWICH WANDERERS RESERVES 2 v. COODENHAM 2

(COODENHAM WIN 6 - 4 ON PENS)

SUFFOLK JUNIOR CUP 2ND ROUND

SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER

Starting this match a mere 4 wins from a Portman Road final, home fans were entitled to expect progress against division 2 SIL side Coddenham. With a large squad to select from, the bench had a youthful but skilful look about it.

The first half , however, turned out to be a complete non-event , with no real goalmouth action or any other action for that matter and the half-time drinks were the highlight of the afternoon so far.

After the break, the game continued in the same fashion, but as the half wore on, Wanderers began having more possession  and dominating the match. Late on in normal time, there were a succession of goalmouth scrambles , with several chances wasted due to rushing shots when time could have been taken if only calls had been given. The introduction of substitutes Matt Wilson, Sam O’Connor and Jimmy Nunn had really livened the home side up, but normal time ended goal-less.

Extra time proved much more exciting, with Wanderers on top, but looking vulnerable to counter-attacks and it was from one of these that the visitors took the lead early on. The 3 subs combined quickly to equalise, with Matt Wilson striking home a fine shot from the edge of the area. The second half of extra time bought more Wanderers pressure and it was from one of several corners that Sam O’Connor put them ahead. The lead was short-lived as the visitors scored with a shot from outside the box that fairly flew into the net... and that was it.

PENALTIES:

The visitors netted first, with Robbie very unlucky not to save it. Dave Kenyon equalised, they scored their next 2 whilst Nigel Haddock and Sam O’Connor missed for Wanderers. The visitors gave hope by missing their 4th, with Paul Clow netting to keep it going, but they tucked away their 5th to go through.

Wanderers team:

Robbie Stannard, Adrian Roper, Ricky Ward, Jack Tait, Paul Clow, Tommy Youngs,

Matt Thompson, Neil Hayward, Nigel Haddock, Dave Kenyon & Ryan Owens.

Subs used – Matt Wilson, Sam O’Connor and Jimmy Nunn (unused – Sam Knibbs & Pop Hodge)
