IPSWICH WANDERERS  v. NEWMARKET TOWN

RIDGEONS PREMIER LEAGUE

SATURDAY 22ND OCTOBER 2005

Newmarket were in buoyant mood after their earlier victory over their hosts in the Suffolk Premier Cup. Tracey was still on the injured list and the side that did so well midweek against Leiston started again.

The first chance of the game fell to Marc Lowe on 11mins when his fierce shot was blocked by Walton in the Newmarket goal after Jorrell Hurd had pulled the ball back from the byline. In their next attack, Jorrell Hurd’s corner was flicked on by Jason Dozzell at the near post but the ball was fractionally too high for Mark Goldfinch whose header went over the bar. On 15 mins Dean Tournay-Godfrey was one on one with Walton when the Newmarket defence left Matthew Cunningham’s through ball, but the ‘keeper blocked the shot with his legs.

Although Wanderers were having the best of the possession, this first 20 mins was spent with both sides mostly giving the ball away to each other. Then on 21 mins Jamie Baker split the Newmarket defence for Rene Swann to run on to his pass with only Walton to beat. The Wanderers forward rounded the ‘keeper and sidefooted home from an acute angle to give the home side a deserved lead.

On 26 mins Reed ran from deep to shoot wide of goal after good build up work from Olive. Newmarket were struggling to find any form and as a result their play was scrappy and their threat on goal was almost non-existent. Wanderers were not playing with the level of passion that they displayed during the week but they were comfortably in control and it was only their own lapses in play that handed any possession to the opposition.

On 40 mins Olive shot from the edge of the box, having no other options available to him as Newmarket upped the pace. Jamie Stannard raced out to block the ball at the feet of Shaw and then Olive’s shot went for a corner, to end the half.

A weak sun had broken through the clouds for the start of the second half and Wanderers were soon on the attack again, winning a series of corners in the first 5 mins which Newmarket dealt with with ease. For a 5 min sustained period Wanderers had great difficulty clearing the ball from their last third and Olive, Shaw and Reed all had chances to bring the score level. The Wanderers forwards were being caught offside far too often and, as a result, attacking moves were breaking down.

Marc Lowe’s salmon-like leap in the area sent the ball to Jorrell Hurd whose volley canned off the legs of defenders and then Rene Swann was through on goal but Walton palmed his shot round the post.

By 70 mins Newmarket had used all 3 substitutes, the sun had disappeared and neither side looked capable of adding to the scoreline.

On 73 mins Newmarket took a quick free kick from the halfway line and Reed shot straight at Jamie Stannard from the byline. Then Olive was through on goal and Jamie Stannard dived at his feet, requiring brief treatment as a result. Newmarket were now proving quite a threat and on 81 mins Jamie Stannard plucked the ball from the head of Mee when under pressure.

Rene Swann doubled his and Wanderers’ tally when persistence down the right by substitute Ricky Martin provided a cross for him to shoot, unmarked, beyond a diving Walton. For the final 5 mins, Newmarket fought to get a consolation goal, Shaw firing over after holding off a determined challenge from Jason Dozzell being their final chance.
