IPSWICH WANDERERS v. LOWESTOFT TOWN RESERVES
SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP 1ST ROUND – 9TH OCTOBER 2004
Bright sunshine and a cloudless sky set the scene for this opening game in the Suffolk Senior Cup with Lowestoft Town Reserves of the Anglian Combination the visitors to Humber Doucy Lane. Lowestoft had come full of confidence after a 6-2 win at Attleborough the previous Saturday and were looking for a cup upset. They started brightly enough with Wanderers' Jamie Stannard having to save from Fletcher in the opening minutes, and their forwards harassing Mark Goldfinch into an uncharacteristic error from which he quickly recovered to pass back for his 'keeper to clear. At the other end, Ricky Martin weaved his way into the opposition's area but put his shot wide as Mayne approached. Chris Sadler then tested the 'keeper with a shot from the edge of the area. Back to the other end and Fletcher released Pike but Andrew Crump rescued the situation with a fine tackle.
An injury to Marc Lowe saw the introduction of Jorrell Hurd who was quickly into action down the right and an entertaining game had play flowing from end to end. With 19 minutes gone Rene Swann lobbed the 'keeper from an acute angle but Paul Westren, following up, was unable to bundle the ball into the net. Lowestoft's Harvey tested Jamie Stannard with a long range shot but the Wanderers 'keeper was commanding his area well. Chris Sadler opened the scoring after 29 minutes when he latched onto a low cross from Jorrell Hurd, who had been put into space by an incisive pass from Terry Layton, and fired home beyond the diving Mayne. The midfield battle was typified by the duel between the number 8s, Daniel Buck and Tosh Reeder and the referee, who had shown himself keen on letting the game flow, did well to keep his notebook and cards in his pocket.
Fletcher was proving elusive up front for Lowestoft and was keeping Jamie Stannard busy, but Mayne, at the other end, did well to keep Lowestoft in the game when he dived at the feet of Jorrell Hurd when he was clean through.

Mayne was back into action right from the start of the second half with Jorrell Hurd again causing most trouble. The bright sunshine of the first half had given way to cloud and a cold wind with rain threatening at any moment. This proved ominous for Lowestoft as they went further behind on 58 minutes when Rene Swann headed past a wrong footed 'keeper from Jorrell Hurd's cross.
Lowestoft had not given up and McKenna broke through two defenders to force a save from Jamie Stannard low to his right. Mayne was certainly the busier of the two 'keepers and was saved from embarrassment when Tacon cleared off the line after Rene Swann had lobbed the 'keeper from the edge of the area following a defensive error. Moments later Daniel Buck saw his powerfully hit shot well saved but Wanderers failed to capitalise on the resultant corner. With 15 minutes of the game remaining, Reeder was sent off for abusive language towards the referee which effectively ended Lowestoft's chances of getting back into the game. Mark Porter replaced Ricky Martin and with his first touch, sent a long range shot just over the bar. On 83 minutes Lee Brill got to the by-line and Daniel Buck, who had arrived late on the edge of the area, netted his low cross. Wanderers continued to attack with Terry Layton, Paul Westren and Jorrell Hurd all having chances but being denied by Mayne.
