IPSWICH WANDERERS v. HADLEIGH UTD

RIDGEONS LEAGUE DIV I - TUESDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2004

Wanderers deservedly took all three points as they dominated this Suffolk derby. In an even start which saw Rene Swann go close and Donovan for Hadleigh force a save from Jamie Stannard, Wanderers soon took the initiative when, on 16 minutes, a corner taken by Jorrell Hurd was driven low into the net by Andrew Crump through a crowded area. Hadleigh forced their way back into the game when first Arnold brought a good save from Jamie Stannard and then Donovan headed wide when unmarked. At the other end, Rene Swann was proving a thorn in the side of the Hadleigh defence but it was Paul Westren who increased the lead when his low, angled drive flew into the bottom corner of the net. Hadleigh, through King, nearly reduced the arrears just before half time but his shot rolled just wide of the post.
The blustery winds, which threatened to influence the game at the start, had subsided and some entertaining football was being played by both teams.

The second half started with a 3 goal salvo in 10 minutes. It was Paul Westren who started it off with his 2nd and Wanderers 3rd after 49 minutes when he scored from a flick on from Andrew Crump. Ricky Martin's curling free kick deceived attackers, defenders and ultimately Godbold in the Hadleigh goal to make it 4 and then Rene Swann got the fifth in compensation for all his work in the first half when he latched on to a flick on and easily rounded the hapless 'keeper.
Jason Dozzell substituted himself and from then on the Wanderers defence lost some of its assurance. A foul by Mark Goldfinch conceded a penalty which Grant converted to give some hope to Hadleigh who continued to push forward. Arnold came close but failed to add to their score, as did Rene Swann and Andrew Crump at the other end.
