FAKENHAM TOWN v. IPSWICH WANDERERS

RIDGEONS LEAGUE DIV 1 – 22ND JANUARY 2005

The wide open spaces of Clip Bush Park , Fakenham suited the expansive play of a

Wanderers side just hitting top form. Defence, midfield and attack had settled into efficient units working well with each other and providing a stiff challenge for any opposition.

The forward partnership of Dean Tournay-Godfrey and the Ridgeon League's top goal scorer, Rene Swann, were soon in action, testing Fakenhams 'keeper Jackson, supplied, as always, by Jorrell Hurd from the right wing. It was he on 17 minutes that opened the scoring as he cut into the box and his shot was deflected off a defender's boot to find the net. Fakenham had little answer to the all over power of their visitors and it was only Neal who had any chance when he called Jamie Stannard into action.
David Grimwood was at the heart of a lot of Wanderers attacking moves, but he helped himself to a goal after 28 minutes when he waltzed through the defence to side- foot home from close range. Wanderers were in constant attack mode with defenders taking it in turns to join in, either on the overlap or with surging runs into the opposition half. Following such a run from Jason Dozzell, Dean Tournay-Godfrey just mis-timed his run to be adjudged offside as he was put through with a clear opportunity to take Wanderers into the half time dressing room 3 nil up.

7 minutes into the second half and Rene Swann polished his leading scorer badge when he burst through a slow defence to take his league tally to 21. Jorrell Hurd, as he has done so many times before this season, was totally rampant on the right wing and it was from one of his threaded balls that Terry Layton pushed his shot narrowly wide.
It was all one way traffic as Fakenham had no answer to the complete dominance of Wanderers but Pask was given an easy task of salvaging something for the home side when slack marking allowed him to put the ball beyond Jamie Stannard on 75 minutes. At the other end, Rene Swann had Jackson calling on all his goalkeeping skills but he was eventually beaten when more good work by Jorrell Hurd opened up the defence for Rene Swann to glide the ball into the net for Wanderers' fourth of the game with just 5 minutes of the game remaining.
At the final whistle, all ears were on the other Div 1 results and it was good news as March, Needham and Haverhill all drew, leaving Wanderers on top by one point.
