DOWNHAM TOWN v. IPSWICH WANDERERS

RIDGEONS LEAGUE DIV 1 – 15TH JANUARY 2005

This visit to Downham, the first of two in North Norfolk in as many weeks, saw Wanderers re-establish their goal scoring credentials after a, comparatively, lean spell in December. With a side unchanged from the victory over Whitton last week, they were looking to maintain the pressure at the top of the table and perhaps steal a march on the leaders.
The early play looked promising and the midfield duo of Marc Lowe and David Grimwood, improving with each game, worked some magic to set Jorrell Hurd free to open the scoring after 5 minutes. Wanderers continued to dominate the game, with Rawlings for Downham livening up the visitors defence with a shot over the bar on 12 minutes but, at the other end, only at last ditch save from Marshall prevented Rene Swann putting Wanderers further ahead. Jorrell Hurd had returned to peak form and was causing so many problems for the Downham defence, but his final ball was not always as good as the build up. He was, though, a joy to watch.
Wanderers did increase the lead on 35 minutes when Dean Tournay-Godfrey turned in a low free kick from David Grimwood. Downham were now effectively out of the game as Wanderers missed chance after chance, their blushes spared only by the half time whistle.

It took 10 minutes from the restart for Rene Swann to get onto the score sheet when he shot into the top corner from Jorrell Hurd's cross. It was all one way traffic now and, whereas in the first half Downham strung together some good moves and threatened the Wanderers goal on occasion, now they were rarely able to get one or two passes together.
Inevitably, Wanderers continued to score; first Dean Tournay-Godfrey notched his second on 70 minutes after good work from Rene Swann and 7 minutes later, the positions were reversed as Swann forced home the rebound from Tournay-Godfrey's shot which had been parried by the Downham 'keeper. Marshall, in the Downham goal, was not having a bad game but was let down by woeful defending.
Daniel Buck wrapped up the scoring to bring the total to six as a slick move down the right wing provided him with the chance to finish in style.
