After last week's result away to Diss things looked so promising for the
match against Soham, it was to be the away side who settled into their
stride first. Wanderers failed to listen to the advice of the Managers
about keeping focused and retaining possession for the first 20min
and conceded two early goals due to poor marking. Heads did not drop
and a spirited fight-back saw Wanderers slowly get into the game. It
was pleasing to see on the half-hour captain Moore burst down the left
pulled the ball back for Dunne go past the defender, forced a low
drive into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. This gave the team
a renewed confidence and were now a match for Soham, this was not
however without a scare from a Soham attack that luckily saw a shot
rebound off the cross bar.
Half-Time: 1-2
The second half started as Wanderers had left off with the team
competing well in every position, what should have been a goal kick
resulted in Soham going into a unexpected 1-3 lead from a headed corner
to the near post. Once again poor marking and no defender on the near
post left the tall Soham centre-half with a free header, something else
to work on in training. Once again Wanderers had to pick themselves up
and get back in the game, Moore was put through down the right by Driver
and finished off to make it 2-3. The visitors now had a real fight on
their hands to claim the 3-points, and once again were unlucky to only
hit the cross bar. Substitutions were made in Howard on for Walker and
Mayes for Guthrie, Wanderers now pushed on for the equaliser, with
Driver's strength and pace causing their defence problems throughout. A
further change was made with Starkie replacing Rankin, who had worked
particularly hard in midfield with Dunne. Moore was then pushed up
front alongside Driver with Soham now on the backfoot, but against the
run of play a brilliant strike on the turn rifled into the top
right-hand corner where the Wanderers keeper Keeler had no chance,
killed off any hope of a share in the points. It was an exciting game
to watch and a gutsy performance by the Youth team with some noticeable
performances by Rex, Milbourne, Downes and man of the match Dunne.
