The Youth team claim their first points of the season away to Diss
watched by a good attendance for a fixture in the Youth League of 56,
which included Robert Fleck. This was a 100% improvement on the result
against Thetford, for Diss had drawn their first match of the season
against Stowmarket in a below par performance so it was also rewarding
to hear that they had given a better account of themselves in making
this an end-to-end spectacular game.
Wanderers started the game without influential captain Owen Rachel in
midfield due to injury, Josh Downes and Luke Howard who were both on holiday. So
a reshuffle was necessary bringing in Keiran Guthrie, Ben Blagg and Neil Summers. The
match started with both teams feeling its way into the game and
Wanderers growing in confidence as time passed, but against the run of
play Beaird for Diss open the scoring to make it 1-0, when Ashely Rex was
caught in possession. Wanderers heads did not drop and equalised from a
goalmouth scramble that saw Ashley Rankin help the ball just over the line.
Once again we were exposed through too easily conceding possession as the
first-half and Beaird for Diss was on hand to head home a powerful
header just inside the 18-yards box from a good cross 2-1.
Half-Time: 2-1
The second half was equally as competitive and Wanderers continued the
first half excellent performance with reknewed confidence, that maybe
they could get something from this game. They battled for everything
and were duly rewarded with an equaliser from the tireless efforts of Lewis Driver for his 2nd in 2-games to make it 2-2. Substitutions were made,
firstly Ian Starkie came on for Neil Summers and Keiran Guthrie who had been causing
Diss problems down the right switched to fullback, played some of his
best football and made some fantastic tackles at crucial stages in the
match, preventing possible one-on-one situations with the keeper. A
dipping 25-yard strike on the Wanderers goal forced a finger tip full
stretch dive by the keeper Chris Keeler.
Wanderers continued to press for the
winner this was not to be and a draw was a fair result in the end as
both teams made a great game of entertaining Ridgeons Youth League
football. Well done to everyone of the Wanderers players you did
yourselves proud and based on this performance can take this forward
into the Soham game at home next week.
