WOODBRIDGE TOWN WOMEN RESERVES v. IPSWICH WANDERERS WOMEN
SUFFOLK WOMEN'S LEAGUE
SUNDAY 12TH NOVEMBER 2006
Wanderers made a number of changes for the trip to Woodbridge. Danni Clear moved back into central defence, Claire Turnbull to central midfield, Sarah Holden to left wing and Roxanne Middle partnered Charlotte Hayward up front.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with both teams struggling to find their feet but it was Wanderers who broke the deadlock after 10 minutes. Clear, from her own half, played a perfect ball cutting right through the Woodbridge midfield and defence to allow Hayward to run onto and slide the ball past the keeper.
Woobridge had a chance soon after with the right winger sending the ball across the 6 yard box. The Wanderers defender swung and missed allowing the striker to shoot from 7 yards. Zoe White in the Wanderers goal brought off a great save to deny Woodbridge an equaliser.
Hayward’s long throws were causing problems for the Woodbridge defence and it was Hayward who was supplied by the marauding Liz Sadler from right back but the shot flashed wide of goal. Another Wanderers attack and this time Sarah Holden could not get on the end of a cross at the far post. An innocuous foul in the centre circle allowed Clear to float a long free kick directly to the feet of Jo Raven who duly smashed over the keeper to make it 0-2 just before half time.
The second half started scrappily for both teams. Mid way through Hayward sent another long throw into the area. There was a mad scramble, the ball was not cleared and Turnbull scored from close range. This was the start of a fantastic 15 minutes for Wanderers. Soon after the goal Raven had to go off through injury allowing Emma Baker to make her debut on the right wing.
From defence captain Julia Mann played a ball straight through both sets of players to allow Hayward to slide the ball past the keeper to make it 0-4.
Susan fox was working very hard in midfield and supplied Turnbull in the centre circle who then went on a run around 3 players, played a one two with Middle and finished well into the bottom corner.
Chances for Woodbridge in the second half were few and far between. But the ones they did have were thwarted by good goal keeping by White and some last ditch tackles from Chloe Drew.
Wanderers final goal came from another Hayward throw which bounced straight through the defence allowing Middle to finish with a cheeky back heel.
Holden was then replaced by Kiera Finnegan. The pace of the game slowed with both teams having few chances.
Final score Woodbridge 0 - Wanderers 6.
The Wanderers manager’s player of the match was awarded to Sarah Holden.
