Ipswich Wanderers 2 – 6 Ipswich Town
Suffolk Women's League
Sunday 10th September 2006
A hot September afternoon welcomed both teams for their first match in the inaugural season of the Suffolk Women’s Football League.
Town got off to a bright start after an early break saw confusion between the Wanderers' defender and ‘keeper resulting an own goal within the first minute. Town then forced their dominance with some nice football both through the centre and on the wings. Some good play and a number of other mistakes saw Wanderers 0-4 down at half time.
Substitutions at half-time saw Wanderers introduce a couple of new signings. This had the effect of calming the side allowing them to keep them ball long enough to build some good attacks. Soon after the break Wanderers won a corner which went unchallenged in the centre of the box. Claire Turnbull then finished well to make it 1-4.
The home side then pressed their advantage with some good attacking play involving Susan Fox and Danni Clear. They’re tireless running paid off when Wanderers won the ball just outside 18 yard box, Roxy Middle took this opportunity to float the ball perfectly over the Town keeper to make it 2-4.
At the other end Zoe White was keeping Wanderers in the game by making a number of good saves but two late goals saw Town finish as 2-6 winners.
Overall it was an entertaining game played in good spirit. Already, Town looks an accomplished side and Wanderers fought valiantly to get back into the game.
Manager’s player of the match for Wanderers was very close but eventually went to Zoe White.
