IPSWICH WANDERERS 2 v. WOODBRIDGE TOWN 2
FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND
SATURDAY 19TH AUGUST 2006
The sun came out for this local derby, given more spice being that it was the first step on the road to Wembley(??) in the FA Cup. Despite a battling performance in the opening game of the season at home to Wroxham and a goal-fest at Harwich in mid-week, Wanderers started very nervously and never really looked the same team as in the previous 2 games.
Manager John Clarkson made on change from the Harwich game, bringing in Keith Hetherington on the bench for a missing Lee Smith. Jamie Baker broke through the Woodbridge defence after 5 mins but was well tackled by Churchyard, then Francis, at the other end, could not control Scales’ cross to get a shot on goal. Francis continued to be a threat as he shot straight at Jamie Stannard. Woodbridge took the lead on 14 mins, somewhat against the run of play, with a great piece of opportunism. Garnham’s goal kick was deep into the Wanderers’ half and Neil Shade stretched to head it clear. Davies picked the ball up 30 yds out and lobbed Jamie Stannard who was caught off his goal line. Directly from the restart, Jamie Baker found a good position but his header went inches wide.

Then Blake crossed from the left but neither Wanderers defenders nor Woodbridge attackers could make contact in front of goal. Both sides seemed to be playing with much endeavour but there was not much outcome although Wanderers did seem to have the better of the play. Ricky Martin was repeating his ploy that he used at Harwich to great effect by cutting in from the wing and shooting from distance, but today he was off the mark. On 29 mins, Ricky Martin and Simon Hyde completed a neat interchange but Marc Lowe’s shot was scuffed and went straight to Garnham. Then the home sides new found front man found his striking partner with a neat pass but Rene Swann’s hasty shot went over the bar. Woodbridge continued to be threatening, with their front men of Blake and Francis, supported by Davies and Berry, creating problems for the home defence as when Berry’s deep cross on 32 mins was hit into the side netting by Francis.

Wanderers were looking for the equaliser and Jamie Baker’s cross was hit firmly by Ricky Martin but Garnham gathered safely. Then the Wanderers’ wing man hit the bar with a thundering shot and it was just as the referee was about to blow for the interval that Rene Swann picked up Grimwood’s shrewd pass through the defence and coolly slotted home to level the scores.

The pace of the 2nd half quickened as Wanderers brought on Alan Mils and Lee Owen at the start but it was Woodbridge that were first into the attack as Blake won a corner but Berry put the kick wide. Then Matthew Cunningham, having a solid game at the back, crossed for Ricky Martin whose header was well saved by Garnham.
The ball did not run for Jamie Stannard on 65 mins as it did not quite reach the area before Blake was onto it. The Wanderers’ ‘keeper stayed to challenge and Mark Goldfinch covered but Blake’s shot was well wide. David Grimwood’s pass for Ricky Martin ran too far as Wanderers pushed forward but Woodbridge were pushing the offside line at the other end and, on 74 mins, Trevivian’s powerful shot was saved by Jamie Stannard, despite taking a deflection on its way.

Danny Smy was introduced to give some extra weight to the attack and this had the desired effect. 2 mins later, Wanderers went into the lead after Woodbridge had failed to clear several times and Ricky Martin’s hanging cross, from the right, was hit home by an unmarked Lee Owen. Wanderers looked to be in control now, with Matthew Cunningham finding plenty of room down the right but with 8 mins remaining Blake again got to Garnham’s long kick before Jamie Stannard and this time made no mistake with his shot to draw the teams level.

Neil Shade was given the space to run into the opposition half and got to the Woodbridge area before crossing for Danny Smy whose swivel shot was just too high.
And so it finished all square, with the replay at Notcutts Park on Tuesday 22nd August, ko 7.45pm.
