IPSWICH WANDERERS 11 LONG MELFORD 0

F A VASE 2ND QUALIFYING ROUND

SATURDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2006

Keith Hetherington was given a start up front, along side Rene Swann, but Marc Lowe was missing through suspension. This was a totally one sided affair but Long Melford stuck to their task until the end, even putting some pressure on the Wanderers defence for brief periods in the second half.

1 – 0, 4 mins; Rene Swann got to the byline and Keith Hetherington flicked on with his head for Danny Smy to open his account for Wanderers.

2 – 0, 5 mins; Rene Swann received the ball from Danny Smy’s throw in and shot between ‘keeper and post from a narrow angle.

Long Melford’s Green was brought down on the edge of the area when making a strong supporting run, but the free kick was weak and easily gathered by Jamie Stannard. Danny Smy’s corner was headed goalward by Keith Hetherington but Frost made a fine one-handed save off the line. Keith Hetherington and Ricky Martin worked the ball between then down the left and Danny Smy was unlucky from 6yds with his shot that went over the bar.

3 – 0, 18 mins; Keith Hetherington sidefooted home Danny Smy’s low cross.

All three goals had come from crosses which had been made from the byline and it was now obvious that the Long Melford defence was struggling to deal with this.

4 – 0, 19 mins; Danny Smy received Lee Owen’s free kick and controlled the ball with one touch, rounded his marker and shot powerfully past a surprised ‘keeper.

5 – 0, 21 mins; An unmarked Simon Hyde made the most of a cross from Keith Hetherington with a hook shot from the edge of the area.

6 – 0, 30 mins; Ricky Martin popped up to hammer home a poor clearance after Lee Owen had once again got round the back of the defence to cross.

Long Melford’s Smith missed a clear chance when he was unmarked from Green’s free kick but he put his header wide.

7 – 0, 40 mins; Lee Owen rifled in from 20 yds after Danny Smy’s cross was only partly cleared

8 – 0, 45 mins; Rene Swann stabbed in Lee Owen’s deflected shot from close range after some good play down the left by Ricky Martin.

Before the referee could blow for half-time, Lee Owen had to go off after stopping a Long Melford clearance with his head from close range. He was replaced by Ben Miller

Lee Smith and Terry Layton were given 45 mins, replacing Simon Hyde and Neil Shade with the former joining Ben Miller in a central midfield role.

9 – 0, 51 mins; Keith Hetherington ran on to Danny Smy’s perfect pass and blasted past a helpless Frost.

Lee Smith was brought down as he burst through the Long Melford back line and received treatment on his shoulder, which continued to bother him for the rest of the game.

10 – 0, 55 mins; Danny Smy got his hat-trick direct from a free kick when he curled the ball round the wall, beyond the reach of Frost.

Smith and Hart for Long Melford were finding more room up front as Sean Bell and Mark Goldfinch were the only ones left at the back to keep Jamie Stannard company but the visitors had little to offer and the only scare was when the LM no 9, Hart appeared to get past Sean Bell, but the danger quickly evapourated.

Lee Smith sent in a low cross across the 6yd box, on the hour, but no-one was on hand to get a foot to it. Then Keith Hetherington was 2 inches too short to effectively reach Ricky Martin’s cross and the ball skimmed off his head and went wide. Then Danny Smy had a free kick from almost precisely the same spot that he had scored before, but this time the shot went high and wide.

11 – 0, 80 mins; Danny Smy wrapped up his, and the team’s scoring, with a 30 yd screamer after a free kick from Matthew Cunningham was only partially cleared.

Lee Smith has a shot on 87 mins which spun off a defenders boot and Frost did well to tip the ball over the bar.

The next round, 1st Proper, is at home versus Soham Town Rangers on Saturday 7th October.
