CRC v. IPSWICH WANDERERS
RIDGEONS PREMIER LEAGUE
SATURDAY 28TH OCTOBER 2006
Wanderers visited the sumptuous surroundings of Cambridge Utd and fielded the same starting 11 that won through in the League Cup in midweek.
In the 2nd minute Wanderers showed off some of the work they have been doing on the training ground when they took a free kick and Dean Tournay-Godfrey headed powerfully against the post. At the other end, Collins preferred the straightforward approach and hammered his free kick round the wall but also wide of the goal. In another classically simple move, Wanderers took the lead on 8 mins when Lee Owen’s corner to the back post was met by an unmarked Sean Bell and he had no trouble in finding the back of the net.
CRC responded with a series of corners, but all were well defended and there was no real threat on the visitors’ goal. As the half progressed, it became obvious that Wanderers were making hard work of what should have been an easy job against the bottom of the table side. Both sides were trying to play neat, passing football, but all too often the passes were going astray.
Lee Owen showed his dribbling skills by getting round two defenders on the by line and crossing for Dean Tournay-Godfrey, but the strikers shot was weak and off target. Then CRC drew level on 33 mins when the ball was not properly cleared and it fell to Smith 25yds out who shot high into the top corner. Good work by Danny Smy to get in a cross from the goal line for Dean Tournay-Godfrey to head ended with the latter needing treatment for a back injury. The half ended with CRC getting their game together and putting some pressure on Wanderers defence.

The second half continued much the same as the first. A clearance from defence saw Neil Shade send a defence-splitting pass through to Rene Swann who was beaten to the ball by Smith P who had come out of his area. Then, on 55 mins, the game changed with the first of 3 goals in 8 minutes. A lofted clearance by Neil Shade found Rene Swann and the Wanderers top scorer had plenty of time to steady himself before sending a lob over the ‘keeper. Then Alan Mills set Rene Swann away again and he evaded the ‘keeper and walked the ball calmly into the net. The third goal came from a free kick by Lee Owen which Dean Tournay-Godfrey had no trouble in heading home into the far corner.
With 15 minutes left, CRC had two corners, both of which came close to getting the home side back into the game but other than that, the game was effectively over although CRC continued to try to play their passing game.
